Ukraine Power Station Targeted by Russian Forces, 5 Killed

Ukraine's energy infrastructure has been severely impacted by a coordinated Russian attack. Resulting in significant loss of life and disruption to power supplies across the country. The assault, which began on Wednesday, has left thousands without power, with DTEK, Ukraine's largest private energy firm, reporting that power has been restored to 8,000 homes following a difficult night for the capital.

The Trypilska power station, the primary source of electricity for Kyiv, has been targeted by Russian forces, according to the Russian defence ministry. However, Ukrainian officials have not confirmed this, and the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.

In Kyiv, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klischko has assured residents that emergency services are on high alert and working to restore power supplies as quickly as possible.

Ukraine has faced repeated Russian assaults on its energy grid, particularly during the winter months since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. This pattern of attacks has become increasingly frequent, with 11 regions targeted overnight, including residential buildings, social infrastructure, civilian enterprises, and railways.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhiy Koretskyi has described the attacks as a mass and combined assault of this scale for the first time since the end of the last heating season.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that strikes on critical infrastructure were reported in the Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, and Rivne regions. The Ukrainian government has assured residents that all necessary measures are being taken to restore power supplies and ensure public safety.

Timur Tkachenko, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Prime Minister's office, stated that the government is working closely with international partners to address the situation.

The attack has had significant consequences for Ukraine's energy infrastructure, with residential buildings, social infrastructure, and civilian enterprises targeted. Heorhiy Reshetilov, the head of Kyiv's emergency services, confirmed that emergency responders are working to respond to the situation and provide support to affected residents.
