Delhi Traffic Signals Get a Brain: Rs 1,789.52-Crore ITMS to Optimize Commute

Delhi's traffic signals are set to become more responsive to the traffic they handle. Thanks to a new Rs 1,789.52-crore Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) approved by the Centre.

The system, which will be implemented in three phases, aims to add a "brain" to Delhi's traffic management system, making better use of the existing road network with real-time traffic data and technology-based traffic management.

According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the system will deploy 1,092 Adaptive Traffic Control System locations. This allows signal timings to change according to prevailing traffic conditions. Signals along identified corridors will also be coordinated to reduce avoidable stoppages and delays.

• Priority movement for ambulances and other emergency vehicles

• Real-time detection of congestion. Slow-moving traffic, and road incidents

• Automated systems to detect violations. This includes red-light and stop-line violations

• AI-based analytics to identify stolen. Hot-listed, and blacklisted vehicles

• Variable Message Sign boards and digital platforms to provide information on congestion, diversions, parking availability, and prevailing traffic conditions.

The ITMS will be rolled out corridor-wise in three phases. With each subsequent phase beginning after the preceding phase is evaluated against prescribed testing, commissioning, acceptance, and performance parameters. The project is expected to be completed over 24 months, followed by five years of operation and maintenance.

Delhi Police has chosen a Master System Integrator through a rigorous bidding process to oversee the project. C-DAC will serve as the Project Management Consultant, offering technical expertise to ensure the system's integrity. This partnership will encompass rigorous technical evaluation, ongoing monitoring, and validation throughout the project's lifecycle.

The Centre has announced a new project aimed at bolstering Delhi's transportation network with a cutting-edge system providing real-time intelligence to streamline traffic management. The initiative is set to enhance road safety. Expedite incident response, and bolster technology-based enforcement, ultimately yielding a more efficient and predictable travel experience for citizens.
