Gang Steals Rs 12,000 Worth of Copper Cables in Kerala

The arrests followed a reported theft of copper cables worth Rs 12,000 from buildings and abandoned BSNL cable terminal boxes. The gang had dispatched two-wheelers from Kerala by train and then flew down to Kochi and Kannur to carry out the thefts.
It was planned down to the last detail. With the gang members arriving in Kerala on September 9, before carrying out their heist.
According to Kannur City Police Commissioner B V Vijaya Bharath Reddy, the gang was spotted in Thrissur on September 19. There, they were found wearing yellow safety helmets typically used by construction workers. The police had received an alert from the Thrissur City Police and patrols had been deployed to monitor the situation.
BSNL has shifted its network from copper to optical fibre. Leaving surplus copper cables as a valuable but non-utilisable resource for the telecom company. The metal also possesses significant scrap value, making abandoned cable networks an attractive target for thieves.
The gang removed cables valued at approximately Rs 12,000 and badly damaged the cable network before being caught by the police. Sections of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and the Telecommunications Act have been invoked in connection with the case.
The thefts are part of a larger trend of copper cable thefts across Kerala, with several incidents reported in recent months. The police are now on high alert, with patrols deployed in areas where the gang was spotted.

The Kannur City Police is conducting an investigation into the case. With officials saying that they will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to justice.
On Monday, the Thrissur City Police Commissioner confirmed that the alert received from their unit had led to the arrests. The police are now working to recover the stolen cables and restore the damaged network.
