Frederik Wessberg, a Starfield modder, has made significant progress in his mod, Seamless Landings, which aims to bring seamless planetary landing to the game without any loading screens. In a recent video posted on his channel, Wessberg showcased the mod's capabilities. This allows players to land on planets and moons without any loading screens.

"I've worked on this thing for roughly half a year at this point, and finally it's starting to look and feel ready enough for me to show it to you," Wessberg writes in the video's description. "I'm bringing Seamless Landings on planets and moons without any loading screens to Starfield."

Starfield's advanced autopilot system enables remarkably smooth landings. Whether the pilot is actively steering the vessel or relinquishing control to the automated system. This hands-free capability allows passengers to relax and take in the scenery without stress.

The aircraft's water-landing capabilities are also noteworthy. Offering a unique opportunity for players to test their skills in a real-world setting, as demonstrated in the game's vanilla mode.

Wessberg had envisioned the mod as a lighthearted, modest endeavor. However, soon encountered significant challenges due to the stark limitations of vanilla Starfield's planetary rendering capabilities, which primarily rely on a static texture, a minimal cloud layer, and a basic atmosphere.

Trying to land on a planet would essentially be akin to landing on a "flat texture." To get the job done, Wessberg "had to completely reimplement Starfield's planet rendering in space in 3D," but "thankfully, Starfield is actually amazingly physically accurate, and in many ways a true space simulator - it just doesn't ever reveal this to the player."

Starfield's seamless landing mod will be completely free on NexusMods when it's eventually ready. "I don’t think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2," former Bethesda dev says.

Wessberg's mod is a significant achievement in the Starfield modding community. And it will be interesting to see how it is received by players and the modding community in the future.
