British Columbia Sues OpenAI Over Alleged Failure to Alert Authorities Before Tumbler Ridge School Shooting

Canadian province British Columbia has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI. The parent company of ChatGPT, over its alleged failure to notify authorities about concerning user interactions on the platform prior to the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting.

The lawsuit, filed to a US federal court on Monday, raises questions about the responsibilities of technology companies when they become aware of credible threats of serious violence.

OpenAI has acknowledged its oversight in not notifying law enforcement about Jessie Van Rootselaar's flagged ChatGPT activity. Which included references to gun violence, months prior to the devastating February attack that claimed eight lives, including six children. The incident had occurred just days after Van Rootselaar's account was previously flagged by OpenAI's safety team.

According to the lawsuit, OpenAI's chief executive Sam Altman apologized to the families of the victims in April, stating "I am deeply sorry that we did not alert law enforcement." The company has not taken meaningful steps to address the concerns raised by survivors, families, and the Tumbler Ridge community, according to British Columbia Attorney General Niki Sharma.

The lawsuit seeks financial damages, with any winnings going towards rebuilding the secondary school. Sharma said the company still has an opportunity to demonstrate accountability by strengthening safeguards. Improving transparency, and taking concrete action to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The Tumbler Ridge mass shooting occurred on February 22, 2023, when Jessie Van Rootselaar killed eight people. This includes six children, at a secondary school in British Columbia. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability from technology companies.

OpenAI has faced criticism for its handling of user interactions on ChatGPT, with some users reporting concerning behavior from the platform. The company has since apologized and taken steps to improve its safety features.

Sharma said she had not read the contents of the OpenAI chats. However, emphasized the need for greater transparency and accountability from technology companies. "We have asked OpenAI to disclose these chats.

They have refused. We should all be asking them: Why?"
