GEC-III to Address Renewable Energy Curtailment with Rs 1.9 Lakh Crore Transmission Scheme
Key Highlights
- Rs 1.9 lakh crore transmission scheme.
- 51,126 circuit kilometres of transmission lines.
- 229 GVA of transformation capacity.
The scheme, which received cabinet approval on Wednesday, seeks to streamline the transfer of electricity from generating units to the grid and ultimately to consumers. As part of the government's efforts to integrate large-scale renewable energy into the national power grid, the Green Energy Corridor programme will provide dedicated transmission infrastructure.
As part of the scheme, 50 gigawatt-hours of Battery Energy Storage Systems will be deployed to store surplus green energy, offering grid flexibility and meeting demand during non-solar hours.
The total outlay for the scheme stands at approximately Rs 1,86,405 crore. Comprising Rs 1,36,378 crore for developing intra-state transmission systems and Rs 50,000 crore for the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems over a seven-year period.
Santosh Kumar Sarangi, secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, revealed that 70% of the scheme will involve greenfield or new projects. This will be awarded through tariff-based competitive bidding.

A project monitoring committee, headed by a joint secretary, will regularly review the progress of the projects, with a steering committee at the level of the cabinet secretary set to monitor the scheme's progress every six months.
Furthermore, the ministry has tied the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems to domestic content requirements, aiming to spur local manufacturing in the sector. Technical consultations will be held to establish guidelines for domestic content requirements for locally made components.
By integrating these measures, the government hopes to create a more sustainable and efficient energy infrastructure, supporting the country's transition to a low-carbon economy.
The Green Energy Corridor programme is a key initiative in India's efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
As part of the scheme, the government aims to create a strong transmission network that can accommodate the increasing demand for renewable energy.
