Bagchi's career has been marked by a series of transitions within the ICICI group. A chemical engineer from IIT Kanpur, he pursued an MBA in finance from IIM Bangalore before joining ICICI. His early role involved the launch of ICICI Direct under ICICI Securities during the dotcom era.

Over the course of more than three decades, he has held various positions across treasury, retail, wholesale banking, capital markets, wealth management, insurance, and digital financial services.
Bagchi's career path has been characterized by a fluidity that defies traditional specializations. He held the CEO & MD role at ICICI Securities before becoming an executive director at ICICI Bank in 2017. Subsequently, he oversaw retail, business, and rural banking, as well as wholesale banking at the bank.
He also served as chairman of ICICI Prudential Asset Management and sat on the boards of ICICI Prudential Pension Funds Management and ICICI Home Finance.
Colleagues describe Bagchi as a forward-thinking leader who emphasizes the importance of setting clear goals and providing teams with a roadmap to achieve them. He is known for his collaborative management style, which balances firmness with persuasion. This approach has contributed to his reputation as a grounded leader, particularly in a large financial conglomerate.

Since June 2023, Bagchi has led ICICI Prudential Life Insurance. During his tenure, the insurer achieved a significant milestone by crossing Rs 10,000 crore in annualized premium equivalent for the first time in FY2025.
Another aspect of Bagchi's career is his preference for a lean approach. During his transfers between ICICI group businesses, he has typically moved without taking large teams with him. This approach reflects his ability to adapt and navigate complex organizational structures.
