Chhattisgarh Police Unravel Rs 120-Crore Khair Smuggling Network

The Chhattisgarh police has cracked down on a significant khair smuggling operation worth an estimated Rs 120 crore. With over 50 tons of the valuable wood seized in the past two months. The operation involved sourcing from cutting trees in Balangir and Bargarh districts of western Odisha.

Passing through Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand before reaching Himachal Pradesh via Haryana.

At each checkpoint, officials presented forged National Transit Pass System documents to facilitate the smuggling. The sheer scale of the operation – involving six states. Five routes, eight shell companies, and a two-year run – raises questions about how it evaded detection for so long.

Authorities have been investigating since June 17. At that time, Mahasamund district police intercepted a truck arriving from Odisha carrying 23,350 kg of khair wood bound for katha-making companies in Himachal Pradesh.

When officers checked the paperwork, they found that the NTPS clearance certificate purportedly issued by the Forest Department, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, had been forged – a document normally used to certify the legal movement of forest produce through checkpoints. The operation highlights the need for improved surveillance and detection mechanisms to prevent such smuggling operations from going undetected.

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, an organization that advocates for environmental justice, has expressed concern over the scale of the operation. This is a clear case of environmental crime, said Prabhat Kumar, Superintendent of Police in Mahasamund district. Authorities have also invoked the Indian Forest Act as they work to trace the money trail and identify those involved in the operation.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. In a related development, the Forest Department has issued a statement assuring that measures will be taken to prevent similar smuggling operations in the future.

The Chhattisgarh police have also launched an inquiry into how such a large-scale operation could have evaded detection for so long.

The busting of this smuggling network raises concerns about the effectiveness of current regulations and law enforcement mechanisms.
