Tarun Tejpal surrenders before Goa court, sent to jail after SC setback

Tehelka founder-editor Tarun Tejpal surrendered before a Goa court on Monday. This comes after a Supreme Court refusal to grant respite in the sexual assault case that led to his conviction. The High Court of Bombay at Goa last month overturned the trial court ruling that acquitted Tejpal and sentenced him to ten years in jail.

The single-judge bench of Justice Alok Aradhe had given Tejpal two weeks to surrender, stating: "The appellant shall surrender within 2 weeks and shall furnish surrender certificate," The Goa government appealed to the High Court, which reversed the trial court's conclusions and convicted him. "The trial court proceeded on a notion that a victim of sexual assault must behave in a stereotypical manner," the high court said.
