The Centre's National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) has found a major shortfall in active case detection. Community mobilization, and follow-up in the district's surveillance unit.

The NJORT report, submitted to the Union health authorities in September, reveals significant gaps in data collection, reporting, and sharing between surveillance, laboratory, immunization, and nutrition programs. This has led to the deaths of children aged between one and 13. Who exhibited symptoms such as high fever, rashes, red spots, stomach pain, and ulcers.

The report attributes the children's deaths to a combination of factors. This includes delayed formal care, cultural beliefs, incomplete vaccination documentation, and the absence of a laboratory diagnosis.

A four-year-old boy from Kundekasa, who died at home on August 6, was one of the victims. An ASHA worker visited the family's residence and advised them to seek medical attention, which was not pursued.

The NJORT report also found that only around 30-35% of children are enrolled in the Poshan Tracker. A government digital system for monitoring nutrition and child development services delivered through anganwadi centers.

According to the report, 604 children were recorded as severely acutely malnourished, and 1,985 were identified as moderately acutely malnourished across 357 anganwadi centers in the Birsa block sectors.

The government had earmarked 32 cases for compensation. However, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has criticized the government's handling of the situation. Officials stated that it has failed to address the issue comprehensively.

Sanjay Uikey, the local MLA, has expressed concerns that the death toll is over 40 and that the government's response has been inadequate.

Dr Shatrughan Dahiya, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Balaghat, acknowledged that the government is addressing the gaps identified by the NJORT. However, he noted that the district has been facing a supply-chain issue in terms of nutrition.

The government's response to the crisis has been criticized by opposition leaders. With some accusing the government of failing to provide adequate support to the affected families.

Experts have called for a more comprehensive approach to addressing the nutritional gaps and improving the coordination between different programs.

The NJORT report has highlighted the need for improved surveillance and community engagement to prevent similar incidents in the future.
