Indian Railways Seeks to Boost Train Speed to 130 kmph, Despite Punctuality Concerns

Indian Railways is working to enhance the average speed of its trains, with a focus on leveraging advanced technology and infrastructure upgrades.

According to recent data from the Ministry of Railways. A substantial portion of the railway network has undergone track renewal and upgrading. With approximately 54,600 km of tracks renewed between 2014 and February 2026.

The expansion of higher-speed track infrastructure has been substantial. With a notable increase in the number of tracks capable of supporting high-speed operations.

By early August 2026, the number of tracks with a sectional speed potential of 130 kmph or above had increased to 24,173 km, accounting for 22.5% of the network, a significant fivefold increase from 2014.

Despite improvements in punctuality, concerns remain, particularly given the sheer volume of trains operating on the network, with over 25,000 trains running daily.

Factors such as congestion on heavily used corridors. Maintenance requirements, and unforeseen events can impact train timings, highlighting the need for continued efforts to improve punctuality.

Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express trains are capable of running at speeds of 160 kmph. However, the majority of the network's high-speed sections are currently limited to 130 kmph.

The introduction of Vande Bharat Express trains is expected to improve average speeds. Thanks to their advanced train set, which enables faster acceleration and deceleration.

However, the actual speed achieved by trains is influenced by a range of factors. This includes track capability, signalling infrastructure, and fencing on routes where open tracks pose a risk to cattle at higher speeds.

Indian Railways is planning to launch its first bullet train. This will operate on a dedicated track, enabling higher speeds and improved passenger experience.

The ministry is also investing in network capacity expansion through new lines. Gauge conversion, and doubling or multitracking projects to support the growth of high-speed rail operations.
