Man Shot by ICE Agents in New York Car While Child Was in the Back Seat.
US immigration officials have defended the actions of officers who shot and wounded a man in his car in New York on Thursday. Meanwhile, his five-year-old son was in the back seat.
The incident has sparked outrage among New Yorkers, with Mayor Zohran Mamdani calling it "unconscionable and incredibly serious".
Markwayne Mullin, the head of the Department of Homeland Security, said officers fired their weapons while trying to apprehend a man with a criminal history. Mullin argued that the child's presence in the vehicle posed a risk to public safety.
Oscar Belgal, 28, a native of the Dominican Republic, had a prior conviction for grand larceny and multiple prior arrests for assault, robbery, and possession of drugs and weapons. He was arrested by police officers in New York in December 2023 and released a few days later, according to the DHS.

ICE agents used their vehicles to attempt to stop Belgal's car. However, he resisted orders to exit the vehicle and instead accelerated, causing a collision with two ICE vehicles. Belgal then accelerated towards other officers, according to Marcos Charles, a top ICE official.
"Our officers, utilizing their training and believing that their lives and the lives of their partners were in danger, used their training and fired their weapons," Charles stated.
New York Mayor Zohran, Mamdani stated. that ICE agents surrounded Belgal's car before opening fire. Mamdani noted that the agents were wearing building work vests and masks that concealed their faces.
Making it difficult to identify them as ICE agents. He confirmed that the child was unharmed.
As the investigation unfolded, officers revealed they had identified themselves and were equipped with body-worn cameras that captured the incident in its entirety. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed Belgal's affiliation with the Trinitarios. A notorious transnational criminal organization scrutinized by the US Justice Department.
According to DHS intelligence, Belgal's ties to the group led authorities to suspect he had prior knowledge of a US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer's fatal shooting.
There have been several high-profile shootings involving ICE officers this year. This includes one that resulted in the death of Renee Good in Minneapolis in January. Governor Kathy Hochul has called for federal authorities to provide answers quickly about these incidents.

"New Yorkers have witnessed far too many acts of violence by a rogue federal agency and untrained agents that operate with impunity," Hochul stated, adding that she had spoken to Mullin and Trump.
The incident has raised concerns about the use of force by ICE officers and the need for greater transparency and accountability. As the investigation into the shooting continues, it remains to be seen how the incident will impact the public's perception of the agency and its actions.
ICE officials have maintained that their actions were justified and that the officers were acting in accordance with their training and protocols. However, the incident has sparked a heated debate about the use of force by law enforcement agencies and the need for greater oversight and accountability.
The DHS has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation and to provide any additional information that may be requested. As the investigation continues, it is likely that more information will come to light about the incident and its aftermath.
