  • Digger opened to a mere $8 million in its first weekend in North America.

Tom Cruise is proudly standing behind his latest film, Digger, despite its underwhelming box office performance. The actor took to Instagram on Sunday to express his thoughts on the Alejandro G.

Iñárritu-directed film, thanking the cast and crew for their work and saying he was proud of the film they made together.

Tom Cruise's latest venture, Digger, has made a lackluster debut in North America, grossing just $8 million in its opening weekend – a paltry sum that eclipses only one previous Cruise film since 2007. The film's underwhelming reception is reflected in its dismal Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%, with many critics labeling it a baffling misfire.

According to Warner Bros., the film was released in around 3,300 theatres across North America, a wide release. The movie, made on a reported budget of $125 million, was expected to do significantly better but instead earned just $8 million in its opening weekend.

Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, and Tom Cruise's Digger, opened simultaneously in theatres, with the latter's box office haul – a modest $33 million – a fraction of Verity's impressive fourfold earnings. Notably, Digger's performance marked a rare low point for Cruise, last seen in a similarly underwhelming outing with Robert Redford in 2007's Lions For Lambs.

The film takes Tom Cruise back to the kind of filmmaker-led projects he worked on earlier in his career. This includes Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July and Magnolia. Tom Cruise is expected to return to action films soon, with Days of Thunder 2 set to begin production.

“Digger is officially in theaters and I am so honored to have had the opportunity to create this film alongside such talented artists,” Cruise posted. “Thank you to the entire cast and crew for your dedication, hard work and joy. The experience was truly unforgettable and I’m so proud of what we created.”.
