September 22 marked a significant milestone for 19-year-old Nisarga Adhikary. Who received an email from the US Department of Justice acknowledging his work in discovering a security vulnerability within their systems. This latest development is the culmination of a remarkable five-month journey that has been making waves in the cybersecurity world.

Nisarga's journey began in February, when he first drew public attention for identifying potential security weaknesses in the Central Board of Secondary Education's digital examination system. His findings soon became part of a wider debate.

With Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi publicly praising him for raising questions about the CBSE system's security.

According to Nisarga, he identified several critical vulnerabilities in the system. This includes the ability to bypass One-Time Password checks and access examiner accounts without receiving a valid code. He also demonstrated the risks associated with account takeover by accessing the account of a physics teacher on the live CBSE system.

Concerns about the OSM portal's reliability had been simmering among educators and families. With students, teachers, and parents already voicing frustrations over glitches, evaluation inconsistencies, and operational hiccups stemming from the rollout. The school board initially dismissed allegations of compromise, but eventually conceded that public reports of cybersecurity breaches had been substantiated.

Nisarga has been invited to join IIT Kanpur's C3iHub as an Open-Source Intelligence and Threat Intelligence Engineer. There, he will be responsible for identifying and understanding potential security threats.

When asked about his future plans, Nisarga expressed his intention to work across technology, defence, and artificial intelligence, potentially pursuing further education in the US or another country.

Nisarga emphasized the importance of talent and curiosity in academic and professional pursuits. Officials stated that a degree is not the sole determinant of success. For now, he is settling into life at IIT Kanpur and focusing on his work at C3iHub.

Nisarga's remarkable journey highlights the importance of cybersecurity awareness and the need for young individuals to develop skills in this critical area.

The US Department of Justice's recognition of Nisarga's work serves as a reminder of the significant contributions that individuals can make to improving cybersecurity and protecting critical infrastructure.

The incident also highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the implementation of digital systems. Particularly in sensitive areas such as education.

As Nisarga continues to work at C3iHub, he will be an important voice in shaping the future of cybersecurity and promoting awareness about the importance of online safety and security.
