Tamil Filmmaker Weighs in on Indie Cinema and Funeral Culture
Tamil indie film 'Members of the Problematic Family' recently made its debut at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, following its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. Director R Gowtham shared his inspiration behind the film, which explores Tamil Nadu's unique funeral culture.
Gowtham credits his early exposure to online platforms like Torrents and Pirate Bay for sparking his interest in filmmaking. During his college years, he spent countless hours watching movies and reading, thanks to his newfound freedom from home responsibilities.
With a career spanning decades, Gowtham has worked on various projects, including corporate videos, short documentaries, and COVID-19-related content. He attributes his decision to venture into feature films to the need for more substantial storytelling.

'Members of the Problematic Family' tells the story of a troubled young man's death and its impact on those around him. Gowtham drew from his own experiences attending funeral ceremonies in Tamil Nadu, where public send-offs are common and often televised.
The filmmaker acknowledges that funeral culture is morbid but also deeply meaningful to the Tamil community. He aimed to capture this essence in his film, which differs from traditional grand funerals.
Gowtham believes it's futile to compete with mainstream cinema for attention and instead focuses on creating quality content. He emphasizes the importance of perseverance, even in the face of uncertainty about an indie film's reception.
