Doctors remove 3.1kg stone from man's bladder and claim record

Doctors at a hospital in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, have successfully removed a massive bladder stone weighing as much as a full-term ba

The 55-year-old patient, who was admitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke, underwent the procedure last week, marking a remarkable medical feat that has left experts in awe.

According to Dr. Prahalahan Balakrishnan, the lead surgeon behind the operation, the stone weighed an astonishing 3.1 kilograms (6.8 pounds), equivalent to the weight of a newborn child.

The patient had been experiencing difficulty urinating and was subsequently diagnosed with bladder stones during his hospital stay. The surgery revealed that the stone had been present in the patient's bladder for approximately five to ten years, growing larger over time due to mineral crystallization in the urine.

Bladder stones are formed when minerals in the urine solidify into solid lumps, often resulting from incomplete bladder emptying and concentrated urine. While small stones may pass on their own, larger ones can block urine flow, necessitating medical intervention. A stone exceeding 4 centimeters in size is considered giant.

The Guinness World Records previously documented a massive bladder stone removed from a patient in Brazil in 2003, weighing 1.9 kilograms (4.2 pounds) and measuring 17.9 centimeters (7 inches) in length. The Sri Lankan stone, however, measured an impressive 17 centimeters in width, comparable to the size of an ostrich egg.

Dr. Balakrishnan emphasized that the patient was in 'very good health' following the surgery and is continuing to receive treatment for his other medical conditions at the hospital. The remarkable procedure serves as a testament to the skill and expertise of Sri Lankan doctors, pushing the boundaries of medical knowledge and breaking records in the process.
