Wales Women Face Traumatic Journey for Abortion Care Due to Lack of Services
Women in Wales may be forced to continue unwanted pregnancies due to inadequate access to surgical abortion care, according to Dr Ed Dorman, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.
Dorman treats women from Wales every other week at a British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) clinic in London and is concerned about the 'unknown number' of women who are unable to travel for an abortion.
These women face the added trauma of traveling to England for care after 18 weeks of pregnancy, which can be a significant burden on those already dealing with an unplanned pregnancy.
The Welsh government has assured that it is working with NHS Wales to identify and address barriers to providing surgical abortion services locally.

However, the lack of availability of surgical abortions in Wales means that many women are forced to travel to England for care, where they may face longer waiting times and higher costs.
Dr Jane Dickson, who represents the British Society of Abortion Care Providers (BSACP) in Wales, highlights the need for more accessible abortion services locally, saying 'surgical abortions could be faster and offer quicker recovery times - but are rarely available in Wales'.
Dickson also notes that conscientious objection is widespread in Wales, making it difficult to provide comprehensive care.
