As Microsoft's Xbox division continues to grapple with the fallout of mass layoffs, the company's already lofty expectations are being further eroded by the ongoing turmoil. An id Software employee who narrowly escaped the studio's own round of redundancies shared a candid assessment with Aftermath, describing the situation as "chaotic" and highlighting the immense pressure on Xbox's leadership to deliver.

The strategic plan championed by CEO Asha Sharma, have left the team teetering on the edge of uncertainty. With creative lead Matt Booty estimating that the company has already shaved off 75% of its workforce.

The sense of unease among Xbox developers is palpable. As they wait with bated breath for the next wave of changes to unfold.

The developer noted that while there has been an attempt to communicate to the studios. It is still entirely in vague corporate rhetoric, says the id employee. I still don't believe they have a clear vision for the future.

The only concrete thing they have communicated is they want higher profits. And they want it now. Previously, it was reported that Microsoft's notoriously high profit expectations had left Xbox with an ultimatum.

Assessing the Xbox business, Sharma said in June that our business today is not healthy and spoke negatively of margins that were 3 to 10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses.

Microsoft's plans for Xbox are beset by a multitude of challenges, one of which is the paradoxical nature of layoffs. On one hand, the company aims to release more and better games, a goal it has struggled to achieve for years. The consequences of layoffs, however, are far-reaching.

The loss of experienced developers, including those from the esteemed Elder Scrolls team, will undoubtedly impact the quality and consistency of games. Furthermore, the burden of overseeing acquired studios will fall squarely on the shoulders of already stretched Xbox teams. The resulting uncertainty and fear will likely stifle creativity and innovation, ultimately affecting the mental well-being of the creative workforce.
