Sebi Chief Warns of Rising Investment Frauds Amid Growing Retail Investor Base

Sebi Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey has sounded the alarm on rising investment frauds. Warning retail investors to be cautious and verify the authenticity of investment opportunities. Pandey, speaking at the launch of Project Jagruk, an investor awareness campaign, highlighted the need for investors to understand financial products and risks before making investment decisions.
"Do not invest because someone told you to. Do not invest because everyone else is investing. Invest because you understand," Pandey said, emphasizing the importance of investor education.

According to Sebi, 63% of households are aware of at least one securities market product, but only 9.5% participate in the market. The survey also found that only 36% of investors have high or moderate securities market knowledge.
Sebi has launched Project Jagruk to provide new and potential investors with accurate information and tailored awareness campaigns. The campaign will be rolled out in English, Hindi, and 11 regional languages, using various media channels. This includes television, print, radio, cinema, outdoor media, digital platforms, social media, OTT, and WhatsApp.
Sebi's WhatsApp channel will be used to send messages, with the option to make it more interactive in the future. The campaign aims to take financial literacy to the last mile in rural India. Covering universities and colleges, and including a National Securities Market Awareness curriculum and a free SEBI Investor Awareness test through NISM.

The initiative is part of Sebi's efforts to address the growing challenge of investor education. With the number of unique investors growing at 20% annually. Sebi has around 15 crore unique investors.
With the challenge being how to provide new and potential investors with accurate information to understand the risks and opportunities before making investment decisions.
