Aviation giant IndiGo has announced a significant hike in fuel charges for all its domestic and international flights, effective from October 6, 2026. For domestic flights, the fuel charge will vary based on the distance travelled, ranging from Rs 375 to Rs 1,300. On international routes, the revised charge will range from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000. IndiGo has attributed the rise in fuel costs to volatile prices in the Middle East, which has kept oil markets on edge.

The airline had previously raised charges for several ancillary services, including infant travel and excess baggage, back in September. The revised fuel charges are expected to impact airlines' cost structures and network economics, including those of IndiGo.

Impact on Passengers

Passengers can expect to pay more for their flights due to the increased fuel charges. The exact amount will depend on the distance of the flight and the airline's pricing strategy.

Background Context

Rising aviation turbine fuel costs have been a concern for airlines in recent months. The Middle East conflict has led to a significant increase in oil prices, which has pushed up fuel costs.

Next Steps

IndiGo has not announced any plans to reduce its fuel charges or adjust its pricing strategy in response to the increased costs. The airline will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments as needed.
