RBI Clears Anup Bagchi, Anup Kumar Saha as HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank CEOs

Two private banks, HDFC Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank, have resolved CEO succession uncertainty, with the RBI clearing new leaders for the two private sector lenders after their incumbent CEOs opted against seeking fresh terms.
HDFC Bank has appointed Anup Bagchi as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective 27 October, succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan. Bagchi, with over 30 years of experience across retail and wholesale banking, capital markets, treasury, and insurance, has spent a significant portion of his career with the ICICI Group.
He served as executive director at ICICI Bank from 2017 to 2023, overseeing retail, business/rural, and wholesale banking, before heading ICICI Securities. Since June 2023, he has been Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.

Under Bagchi'It was leadership, ICICI Prudential Life's annualised premium equivalent has reached 10,000 crore for the first time in FY25. The company's profit after tax has also risen nearly 40% to 1,189 crore.

Bagchi's appointment comes after a period of transformation for HDFC Bank. This has been expanding its digital operations and strengthening its balance sheet. The bank's board will induct him as an additional director from October 2, subject to shareholder approval.
In a related development, Kotak Mahindra Bank has appointed Anup Kumar Saha as its new CEO, succeeding Ashok Vaswani. Saha, with over 32 years of experience in financial services. This includes 25 years with the bank, will lead the franchise towards sustainable growth.
The bank's chairman, C S Rajan, has expressed confidence in Saha's ability to drive the bank's growth and expansion.

As of June 30, Kotak Mahindra Group had 5,916 branches and a consolidated balance sheet of Rs 10.1 lakh crore, showing the bank's significant presence in the Indian banking sector.
