ISRO Unveils New Facility in Guwahati to Boost Radar and Satellite Tracking Capabilities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has laid the foundation stone for a new facility in Chandrapur, near Guwahati. This is set to enhance the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) radar and satellite tracking capabilities. The facility, part of ISRO's Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis (NETRA), aims to improve Space Situational Awareness.

This enables better tracking of space assets and protection from space debris.

ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) is the nodal agency responsible for setting up this facility equipped with advanced radar technologies. Once operational, the Guwahati-based facility is expected to contribute to improving ionospheric and atmospheric observations, weather monitoring, cloud observations, and space weather studies.

According to ISRO, the facility will enable scientists to observe and understand important processes in the atmosphere and near-Earth space environment, supporting improved weather prediction, space-weather assessment, communication and navigation studies, and future space mission and application.

ISRO also stated that the facility will have wide-scale applications in flash-flood and urban-flood monitoring warnings. It will also improve thunderstorm and lightning nowcasting, guiding aviation services, and supporting both regional and national requirements.

The facility is part of ISRO's efforts to enhance its space tracking capabilities. This is essential for tracking space assets and protecting them from colliding with space debris.

ISRO has been working on various initiatives to improve its space tracking capabilities, including the development of advanced radar technologies. These efforts aim to improve the country's space situational awareness and enable better tracking of space assets.

With the completion of this facility, ISRO is expected to make significant strides in improving the country's space tracking capabilities. This enables better weather prediction, space-weather assessment, and communication and navigation studies.
