Wholesale onion prices in major urban mandis had witnessed temporary upward pressure due to intermittent monsoon transport disruptions and seasonal transitions between old rabi crop inventories and incoming kharif arrivals. By directly injecting buffer stocks into consumer markets, the government effectively halted speculative hoarding by wholesale middlemen.

In addition to physical retail vans, subsidized onions are being made available through popular quick-commerce grocery delivery platforms to ensure convenient digital access for working families.

Long-Term Price Monitoring Mechanisms

Ministry officials affirmed that the central buffer stock currently holds over 4.7 lakh metric tonnes of quality onions, guaranteeing ample supply reserves to meet consumer demand throughout the festive period. Strict monitoring of wholesale cold storages continues across key producing districts.
