NBC News Helicopter Crash in Los Angeles Leaves Three Dead, Two Injured

Three people have died and two others are injured after a news helicopter crashed in suburban Los Angeles. Fire authorities in the city have said. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the helicopter was covering a deadly bus crash.

NBC Los Angeles confirmed that the helicopter was its NewsChopper4, which also operated for Telemundo 52. The aircraft went down just before 19:00 local time (01:00 BST) between two commercial buildings in the Chatsworth neighbourhood.

More than 70 firefighters were deployed to the scene, and fire from the crash spread to four vehicles and two storage containers. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) said that one confirmed patient was outside of the helicopter when it crashed.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) posted on X that it extended "thoughts and prayers to the family, friends and colleagues of KNBC 4, Los Angeles". The LAPD also confirmed that two people were killed and six others were injured in a separate incident earlier in the day.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass wrote on X that she was "absolutely devastated by the loss of life in Chatsworth tonight". She added, "My heart is with the families and loved ones of those we lost in the tragic bus collision and helicopter crash."

California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X that "our hearts are with the victims and families of tonight's devastating Metro bus and helicopter crashes in Chatsworth, and with the entire NBC4 family". He also thanked first responders for their work.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the incident. The NTSB will examine the circumstances surrounding the crash to determine its cause and identify any contributing factors.
