Modi, Trump Discuss Trade, Defence Amid US Tariff Threat on Russian Oil

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. This marked the first phone conversation between the two leaders since Trump signed the law granting the US authority to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Indian imports of Russian energy.

This conversation comes after Modi and Trump last spoke in April. This comes after the agreement on a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran in the Middle East.

Modi and Trump discussed their bilateral cooperation in various areas, including trade, defense, energy, and critical technologies. They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and agreed to maintain close engagement to deepen cooperation. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including efforts to promote global peace and security.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office. Modi and Trump reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across trade, defense, energy, and other areas of mutual interest. They also discussed regional and international developments and ongoing efforts to promote global peace and security.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to travel to India in the third week of October. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the US for the G20 leaders' summit in December.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the complex nature of the Indo-US trade deal negotiations. Officials stated that the two sides have made significant progress in reaching an understanding on the trade agreement. He highlighted the importance of addressing terrorism emanating from Pakistan as a key concern for India.

If this issue is not fully appreciated by the US, it can have a negative impact on the relationship between the two countries.

Jaishankar noted that the issue of terrorism is particularly important for India. As the country has been subjected to a significant amount of terrorism from a neighboring country due to a deliberate and conscious policy over many decades.
