Russian Warship Fires Emergency Flares at Danish Helicopter in Baltic Sea Incident

Denmark has accused a Russian warship of firing two emergency flares at one of its helicopters while it was tracking the vessel in the Baltic Sea. The incident occurred on Monday during a "routine" monitoring operation, according to the Danish armed forces.

Danish Government Has Summoned Russian

The Danish government has summoned the Russian ambassador over the incident, which Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described as "reckless". Frederiksen said the action was designed to "intimidate and divide", adding that Denmark would not tolerate such behavior. Moscow has not commented on the incident.

The Baltic Sea region has seen increased tensions between Russia and NATO allies in recent months. With Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine continuing to escalate. Lithuania shares a large part of its southern and eastern border with Belarus, a key Russian ally.

Nato Forces Shot Down Drone

NATO forces shot down a drone that entered Lithuania's airspace overnight, authorities said. The origins of the drone are yet to be determined, but President Gitanas Nausėda pointed to increased Russian aggression in recent months.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen accused Russia of "gradually shifting the boundary for what they consider acceptable behaviour". He added that Denmark would not accept such behavior, and called on Russia to clarify its actions.

Poland also announced there had been "aviation operations" in its airspace on Monday night due to Russian Federation's jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory. The overnight operations were of a "preventive nature" and aimed at "securing airspace and its protection, especially in areas adjacent to threatened regions".

The incident is ongoing, with the Danish government continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the firing of the emergency flares. The Russian ambassador has been summoned for questioning.
