Indias PM Modi Sparks Controversy with Dimagi Naxal Remark
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sparked controversy on Independence Day when he referred to people with a “Naxal mentality” as “dimagi naxals”. The term was met with criticism from opposition leaders, including Congress leader P Chidambaram and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal.
Modi said that while armed Naxalism had weakened, people with a “Naxal mentality” continued to pose a threat. He also claimed that ideological Naxals were “waiting for opportunities” and attempting to revive “violence and anarchy”.
Chidambaram responded He argued that people who question the government and seek a better system without corruption should not be described in those terms.
Kejriwal also adopted the label, saying he was proud to be a “dimagi Naxal” and arguing that it was unfair to describe critics of the government as terrorists. He invoked Bhagat Singh and B R Ambedkar, two Indian revolutionaries who challenged authority.

The controversy has sparked a heated debate on social media, with some BJP leaders defending Modi's comments and others criticizing them as divisive and inflammatory.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said Chidambaram’s response was “very unfortunate & highly damaging”, arguing that Modi had not called opposition leaders “dimagi naxals”. Rijiju defined the term as referring to those who support Maoists, separatists, or want to cut ties with India.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact India's politics and whether the government will back down from its stance on Naxalism.
