Why Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is a house divided

Former Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu made a rare appearance at a BJP event in Delhi on Sunday, marking the 8th death anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The occasion saw Naidu inaugurating 25 Atal Canteens, a move that surprised many given his history with the party.

Naidu has usually kept away from BJP events, but he made an exception to attend the event and meet Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, BJP Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi, and other senior leaders. This appearance has sparked curiosity about Naidu's intentions and his relationship with the BJP.

The split within the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is still adjusting to the new departments. The CPWD and NBCC, two construction arms of the ministry, are now under the Department of Capital Development, but many of their projects are outside Delhi. The urban transport subject remains under the Department of Urban Development, while Delhi Metro and NCRTC are under the Department of Capital Development.

Efforts are being made to bring clarity on some of the issues within the ministry. The demolition of Krishi Bhawan, a historic government office in Lutyens' Delhi, is set to start soon, with the Ministries of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry likely to move out of the area altogether.

The two ministries will be relocated to the government office complex at Netaji Nagar in South Delhi, while the sites of Krishi Bhawan and Shastri Bhawan are to be redeveloped into new secretariat buildings. This change is part of a larger effort to modernize the Ministry's infrastructure.
