Sony Pictures is reportedly closing in on a deal to bring the hit video game franchise Battlefield to the big screen. With acclaimed director Christopher McQuarrie at the helm and Oscar-winning producer Michael B Jordan set to lend his expertise to the project.

The studio is negotiating for the project following a multi-studio bidding war, reported Variety. Sony has declined to comment on the talks.

The film, which is scheduled for theatrical release on June 30, 2028, is set to be a significant addition to the studio's slate of big-screen adaptations. This comes after the success of recent releases such as Spider-Man: No Way Home and Morbius.

The story centres on a conflict between a fractured NATO and a private military company. A theme that has proven popular with gamers and critics alike. The 18th instalment in the series, released last year, was set between 2027 and 2028 and has become the best-selling first-person shooter of the year, surpassing Activision's Call of Duty.

McQuarrie is also set to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger in King Conan. The third Conan the Barbarian film, and is working with Cruise on an upcoming outer-space film directed by Doug Liman. The director's involvement in the Battlefield project comes after his work on the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Which he concluded with last year's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, starring Tom Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt.

Jordan, meanwhile, has previous experience with video game adaptations, having starred in and produced the 2018 film Tomb Raider. He will next star in, direct and produce a reimagining of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios. This is scheduled to release in theatres on March 5, 2027.
