Sheeran's Tour Resumes Without Openers Amid Pro-Palestine Controversy

PHILADELPHIA-Jody Hauck, a longtime Ed Sheeran fan since his days as an opener for Taylor Swift, attended the singer-songwriter's concert at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia hours before showtime. Despite controversy surrounding American rapper Macklemore being dropped from his tour over pro-Palestinian remarks, many fans were excited to see Sheeran perform.

The decision to continue with the tour without openers was met with mixed reactions among attendees. Some fans, like Bob Worthington, 67, who came with his wife, Anastasia Worthington, expressed a desire to separate personal opinions from the concert experience. "We're not here for any controversy," Worthington said.

"There's a lot of that going on, and that can stay on the side. If somebody wants to have a beer and sit down and talk about what’s going on in the world, we do that another time."

The stripped-down event resulted in several empty seats in the venue when the concert began. The price for tickets dropped significantly following Macklemore's removal from the tour, with sales declining as a result.

Ed Sheeran's decision to continue the tour without openers was seen as a response to the backlash against Macklemore's pro-Palestinian remarks. During his first public comments on the matter, Sheeran stated that he never wanted to be an activist musician but found himself in the middle of a complex and passionate argument about free speech and politics.

A small pro-Palestine protest was held at a subway station near the stadium. Meanwhile, John Leslie, a retired 69-year-old, attended the concert because it offends him to his core that tax dollars go toward wars abroad when children in this country go hungry.

Shraddha Meshram, a fan who came with her daughter, expressed similar sentiments about the impact of foreign policy on domestic issues.

Arijit Singh, a local resident who attended the concert, noted that the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from the tour highlighted the need for artists to have opinions without their thoughts and ideas being constricted. Elias Leight, a music critic, pointed out that the incident raised important questions about the role of artists in shaping public discourse.
