Lillard Opens Up About Scream 7 Return Amid Controversy Surrounding Melissa Barrera's Firing

Matthew Lillard has spoken out about his decision to reprise his role in Scream 7. This comes after the controversy surrounding Melissa Barrera's firing from the film. During a recent Q&A session at a 30th anniversary screening of the original Scream.

Lillard addressed the challenges actors face when speaking out on political issues.

Lillard stated that Barrera was "on the right side of history" and acknowledged he did not fully consider the implications of joining the sequel after her exit. He expressed regret over his decision to participate in the film, saying "reports suggest bad about that. reports suggest shame about that,".

Macklemore was fired from Ed Sheeran's concert openings after using the "Free Palestine" slogan during his performance. The move came amid a backlash against Macklemore for his support of the Palestinian cause.

Matthew Lillard has been open about his own involvement in the controversy. Officials stated that he believes actors should support vulnerable communities even when doing so carries professional risks. He expressed frustration with the lack of public support for Barrera's stance on Palestine, saying "the whole world didn’t pipe up.

Director of Scream 7, Christopher Landon, had also responded to Barrera's firing at the time. Authorities stated that he had zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form. He later departed the project.

Jenna Ortega, who starred alongside Barrera in the rebooted films, also exited the project. Ortega later stated that the film was "falling apart" after Barrera left.

During a Q&A session, Lillard explained his decision to return to Scream 7, saying In that moment, I was so excited to get back, I didn’t really think about Melissa and the journey, and I didn’t say ‘no.’ I’m embarrassed, and that’s the truth.

Lillard further discussed Barrera's firing, stating "For me, I have queer kids, if I’m not standing up for queer kids or kids in the trans community, what the fuck am I doing?" He emphasized the importance of supporting vulnerable communities, even when it comes with professional risks.
