OpenAI launches a safer ChatGPT for teens — years after teens started using it

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a new product designed to address safety concerns and educational reforms surrounding AI chatbots. The launch comes amid numerous lawsuits over AI chatbots' lack of safety measures, which have led to teen suicides and other mental health concerns.

The new product promises to include additional safety measures, such as the Study Mode feature, which encourages teens to engage with material in a more meaningful way rather than just getting quick answers. The app will also support quizzes and learning visualizations, and controls that allow parents or guardians to decide when Study Mode is enabled.

"We want to ensure that our technology is used in a way that promotes healthy learning habits and digital citizenship," said an OpenAI spokesperson. "Our Under-18 Principles guide our development of products like ChatGPT for Teens, and we're committed to putting the well-being of our users first."

OpenAI has partnered with CodeAI to help teens learn more about AI, including how it works and how to use it responsibly. The company also offers ChatGPT for Teachers to support schools in providing institution-managed access to AI and support. With these new measures in place, OpenAI aims to empower teens to harness the power of AI while maintaining a safe and responsible online experience.
