Apple is reportedly preparing to release AirPods with cameras, a move that has raised concerns about privacy and surveillance. However, the company appears to have thought this through, with the cameras designed to act as eyes for the Siri digital assistant and not take photos or video.
The rumored cameras were confirmed via video footage found in Apple's macOS 26.7 RC, which shows a man holding up a book while wearing AirPods and having a conversation with Siri about it. The audio track accompanying the video says: "With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later."
The addition of cameras to the popular wireless earbuds is further confirmed through code that references a "Hair Detected" error, which would warn users when their hair is covering the AirPods' camera. Apple has stated that the cameras will not be able to record media.
Apple's goal with this feature appears to be to provide a way for AirPods owners to engage with the newly upgraded Siri AI, which is set to ship in September with Apple's iOS 27 and other software updates. The company hopes that this feature could push consumers toward a screen-free future or at least reduce the need to pull out an iPhone throughout the day.
However, there is one wrinkle: the new AirPods will include an LED indicator that lights up whenever the device is sharing visual data to the cloud. This could work against Apple, as it risks visually lumping AirPods in with other AI wearables already facing public skepticism. Despite this, Apple's efforts to prioritize transparency and privacy may ultimately pay off.
