Marty Nadler, a writer, producer, and stand-up comedian who collaborated with Garry Marshall on projects including Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, Pretty Woman, and Runaway Bride for over four decades, has passed away at the age of 80. Nadler's death was announced

Nadler began his career in television writing in the 1970s, serving as lead writer on several sitcoms produced during this time. He contributed jokes to nine films directed Marshall considered Nadler a good luck charm and gave him a cameo in those movies. "He was like a magician, he could make anything happen," Marshall once said about Nadler.

Away from his partnership with Marshall, Nadler worked on numerous TV comedies such as That’s My Mama, Chico and the Man, The Last Resort, Love, Sidney, She’s the Sheriff, The Redd Foxx Show, Perfect Strangers, The Hogan Family, and Amen. He also honed his comedy chops as a summer camp counselor and discovered a passion for stand-up while studying theater at Ithaca College.

Nadler was born on October 13, 1945, in the Bronx to Max Nadler, a traveling salesman who died when Marty was just three years old. He was raised I was always in the school plays." Nadler's desire to pursue showbiz began at the age of eight, and he went on to become a regular performer at The Improv in New York City, where he befriended comedians like Jay Leno, Richard Lewis, and Jimmie Walker.

Nadler's career was further boosted when his friend Jeffrey Kramer introduced him to Garry Marshall, who offered to help him if he ever came west. When Nadler did move to Los Angeles, Marshall picked him up at the airport, put him up for a few weeks, and introduced him to her brother Garry.

He read a spec script that Nadler wrote, starting their long-standing collaboration. Over the years, Nadler married writer Holly Mascott in 1978 and bought a home on Martha's Vineyard with her in 1984. In his later years, he retired to South Florida and served as an executive producer of the TV series iMordecai (2022), starring Judd Hirsch.

Nadler recently reunited with his son Charlie for a stand-up performance at the Garry Marshall Theatre in Burbank, which will be released early next year. The special, titled A Boomer & a Millennial Walk Into a Special, was recorded in front of family, friends, and colleagues from all chapters of Nadler's life.

Donations in Marty Nadler's memory can be made to the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, an organization he supported throughout his life due to his own struggles with the autoimmune disorder that ultimately took his life. A celebration of life for Nadler will take place in multiple locations, and he will be interned on Martha’s Vineyard, where he had built a home and found inspiration for many of his projects.
