President Donald Trump has requested that tech firm Apple rename Lake Ontario as Lake America in order to comply with his executive order changing the name of the Great Lake, according to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

"The president has reached out to Apple directly," Burgum stated during an interview on Fox News. "I'm sure we may be seeing that change coming up soon." This move comes after Trump signed an executive order on Thursday seeking to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, following the collapse of trade negotiations between Canada and the US.

Google has already made the switch for its US-based users over the weekend, while users in Canada still see the lake as Lake Ontario. The renaming has faced opposition in Canada, with one electrical utility company, Hydro One, apologizing on Sunday for displaying the incorrect name due to a third-party mapping service.

"We are working with our vendor to correct the issue as quickly as possible and restore the proper geographic reference," the company stated in its apology.

Not all map providers have changed the name of Lake Ontario. MapQuest, an American free web mapping service launched in 1996, announced that it would not be changing the name. Instead, the platform unveiled a tool allowing users to change the lake's name and share their creations.

This move led to MapQuest rising to the top of the most-downloaded free applications as of Monday morning on the Apple App Store in Canada.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has also expressed opposition to the renaming, stating "No one's going to call it Lake of America." Ford added that the name has been used for hundreds of years and will continue to be known as Lake Ontario. The BBC has contacted Apple for comment on the matter, but no response has been received at this time.
