Reed Van Dyk's forthcoming film, Atonement, examining the devastating consequences of conflict, drawing inspiration from a 2012 New Yorker article that left a lasting impression on the screenwriter. The movie, slated for a limited release on Friday, is set against the backdrop of 2003 Baghdad.

Van Dyk, who won critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for his short film "DeKalb Elementary" in 2018, said he was drawn to the idea of exploring the complexities of war and its impact on individuals. "I was so touched by this piece of writing and the story and all these characters and the way that their lives had intersected very tragically, and then by some miracle, they all intersect again a decade later," he said.

Atonement premieres in US cinemas mere days after the US officially concluded its protracted involvement in Iraq. A move that comes as the nation grapples with renewed conflict in Iran. The film tells the story of Mariam Khachaturian.

A widow played by Hiam Abbass, who seeks to escape the devastation of war by relocating to the US with her daughter.

For Holbrook, portraying the tormented Lou was "a fantastic experience," but also an intimidating one. "The preparation for a film like this is everything, and for me it was life altering," he said.

"I wanted to take her place and shout out my feelings and my anger towards why this should happen," Abbass said. "Why on Earth we keep going all the time, causing these pains to people, whoever they are, whatever they are, whatever nationality they come from, whatever conflict we're talking about."
