Trump Delays Canadian Tariffs Amid Last-Minute Agreement
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he was delaying his plan to impose 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian products, just hours before the latest levies were set to go into effect.
The decision came after the two countries reached a last-minute agreement, with Trump stating that he had “paused the 50% Tariffs against Canada” for a three-day period.
Trump said the brief pause was to allow the “finalization of documents” for a deal both countries have reached, which includes comprehensive market access for all American goods and economic security commitments.
The president’s post didn’t specify any details about the deal but noted that the Keystone XL Pipeline, which runs from Nebraska to Canada’s Alberta province, “may be awoken from the grave.”
In a statement on X, Jamieson Greer, the official handle for the U.S. Trade Representative, confirmed the agreement and outlined its key provisions.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sounded more cautious about the state of the deal, saying that substantial progress had been made but important work still needed to be done.
Last month, Trump signed an order imposing 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including wine, dairy, cement, furniture, and ice hockey gear. The White House has accused Canada of unfairly targeting American citizens. made products, including cars, alcohol and dairy goods.
Trump has courted controversy several times for sharing AI-generated images and deepfakes on Truth Social to attack his opponents.
The delay in tariffs is seen as a positive development for Canadian businesses and workers, who had been facing increased costs due to the planned levies. The agreement also marks a significant shift in the US-Canada trade relationship, with both countries seeking to strengthen economic ties and reduce tensions.
