India calls for ‘reciprocity’ in ties as Dhaka demands Hasina extradition

India has firmly rejected Bangladesh's demand for the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying that it will not be negotiated on contentious issues like security concerns.

The Indian government's stance on the issue comes after Dhaka requested India to 'expeditiously act' on extraditing Hasina and other fugitive criminals. The request was made in light of Bangladesh's 'red line' on the extradition of its former leader, who has been living in India for over two years.

India desires positive, constructive and forward-looking relations with Bangladesh based on 'mutuality of interests and reciprocity', said Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. The Indian government has consistently stated that extradition requests are being examined as part of its established processes.

The rejection comes after Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to India was marred Despite this, Jaiswal refused to confirm or deny any possible visit from Rahman.
