South Korea shortens war games with US, citing Washington request

South Korea's annual joint military drills with the US have been cut short due to a proposal from the US side, according to Seoul. The 2026 Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise will now conclude on August 21 instead of the originally planned date of August 27.

The decision comes after US President Donald Trump announced plans to curtail exercises with South Korea, citing his 'very good' relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. However, it has been revealed that neither South Korean nor US officials were aware of Trump's plans in advance.

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated that the combined field training exercise component of the drills will be partially reduced in scale, but the specific details are still under discussion.

The announcement comes after US officials told the Wall Street Journal that Trump is pushing for a meeting with Kim Jong Un during his next trip to Asia, which is expected to take place in November. Sources close to the matter have confirmed that Trump has privately discussed setting up an in-person discussion with Kim during his upcoming visit.

Trump recently wrote on Truth Social: 'These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for ... He added: 'While somewhat unrelated (?), I recently asked the President of South Korea if they would like to join us in the Denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they said, 'No thanks!''

The US president again linked his decision to South Korea's refusal to assist in the denuclearization of Iran, stating: 'We have 39,000 soldiers over there guarding you from Kim Jong Un, your next door neighbour, and you're not going to help us on a very easy military operation in Iran. That's strange.'

The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise was initially expected to be similar in scale to previous years, with around 18,000 South Korean soldiers participating. However, the reduced scale will still involve a significant number of US and South Korean troops.

US military spokesperson Ryan Donald stated that 'our training accounts for that threat', referring to North Korea's deployment of troops to aid Russia's war against Ukraine. The joint military drills were also seen as a response to North Korea's deployment of missiles to strike Ukraine, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemning the move.

The decision to cut short the joint military drills has been met with concern from some quarters, who fear that it may be seen as a sign of weakness in the face of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. However, others have welcomed the move, citing Trump's 'very good' relationship with Kim Jong Un and his desire for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the future of US-South Korea military relations will be shaped With the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise now cut short, it remains to be seen how this will impact the overall security landscape in the region.
