Lili Reinhart Opens Up About Why She Was Initially Hesitant to Star in The Love Hypothesis

Prime Video's latest romantic comedy, The Love Hypothesis, is set to premiere globally on September 23. The film, directed by Claire Scanlon and starring Lili Reinhart as Olive Smith, has been making waves in the industry with its unique take on the traditional rom-com genre.

Lili Reinhart, who also serves as executive producer on the film, shows that she was initially hesitant to take on the role of Olive due to concerns about being pigeonholed into a specific type of project.

"m the first person to say I was very hesitant," Reinhart admits. "I didn't really want to do it at first. I was scared.

I was a year out from Riverdale when I was sent the script in 2024."

Reinhart Focusing Independent Films Television

Reinhart had been focusing on independent films and television projects after her seven-year stint on Riverdale. Wanting to avoid being typecast into commercial roles.

"So, the first few projects I did after Riverdale were independent film and television. I love indie film and TV, but I also was afraid of being stuck in one thing."

Reinhart finally sat down with the script during a trip to Italy for the Venice Film Festival. There, she discovered a world that resonated with her.

"I fell in love with Olive and Adam," Reinhart says. "I'm not a romance reader, so I was really pleasantly surprised by how invested I got while reading on the plane."

Reinhart aimed to course-correct the genre she felt had lost its way. Drawing inspiration from classic rom-coms of the 1990s and early 2000s.

There are some good movies, of course. However, reports suggest in general, romcoms moved very far away from the '90s and early 2000s charm they used to have Reinhart explains. "This one actually felt like we were going back to that, and that was intentional."

Reinhart prioritized ensuring the audience's emotional investment lay with Olive and Adam, rather than relying solely on the fake-dating trope.

The hope for this movie was that in the future. At that time, people talk about it, they're talking about Olive and Adam, not just saying, 'Oh, it was a scientist fake-dating romcom' Reinhart says.

Reinhart aimed to create a film that delivered familiar comfort without feeling dated. Balancing the need for emotional investment with the risk of relying on tropes.

"Sure, people will still describe it that way, but the whole point was that these characters were so built out that you really fell in love with them and didn't get lost in the plot."

For Reinhart, The Love Hypothesis represents a return to form for the romantic comedy genre, one that balances nostalgia with modern sensibilities.
