India is set to diversify its saffron production. With the Union Territory of Ladakh launching a large-scale cultivation drive in the Leh district. Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has overseen the planting of 90,000 saffron corms, weighing 800 kilograms, in the region's unique high-altitude environment.
This is well-suited for the prized spice.
The region's distinct climate, characterized by minimum temperatures ranging from 8°C to 10°C and moderate snowfall, creates an optimal environment for the plant to thrive. This is vital, as only corms weighing more than 10 grams are capable of bearing saffron flowers, and the number of flowers depends on the size of the corm.
The Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine, in collaboration with the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, has been working on a project to cultivate medicinal, aromatic, and flowering plants in the region. In 2024, the institute successfully grew saffron in open fields in Leh, paving the way for this large-scale cultivation drive.

Project Him Sarovar aims to reclaim lost agrarian land in Ladakh. And the saffron cultivation drive is a significant step in this direction. The region's high altitude and unique climate make it an ideal location for saffron cultivation.
And the government is keen to capitalize on this opportunity. With the Union Territory of Ladakh embarking on this large-scale cultivation drive. India is poised to diversify its saffron production and create new livelihood opportunities for its farmers and youth.
The success of the saffron cultivation drive in Ladakh highlights the potential of this crop in India's agricultural sector. With the right conditions and support, Punjab and Haryana, two neighboring states, could also become significant players in saffron production. The two states have the necessary climate and soil conditions to cultivate saffron.
And the government should consider providing support to farmers in these regions to encourage large-scale cultivation.
According to the Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine. An acre of saffron cultivation in Pampore, Kashmir, can yield a maximum of up to 2 kg of saffron. With the right support and infrastructure, Punjab and Haryana could potentially achieve similar yields, making them significant contributors to India's saffron production.
