Nuclear power offers a reliable source of electricity that can operate around the clock, producing no emissions in the process. However, the construction of new reactors can be a lengthy process, taking a decade or more to complete due to the need for permits and construction.
In recent years, deals have focused on existing nuclear plants, as the cost and complexity of building new reactors have been significant.
Amazon.com Inc. has recently agreed to purchase 690 megawatts of power from Constellation Energy Corp. With the deal including capacity from an upgrade to the Calvert Cliffs nuclear facility in Maryland.
Microsoft Corp. has also announced plans to buy power from the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. With Constellation planning to restart the reactor by next year.
