External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to embark on a high-stakes diplomatic mission to Ukraine and Poland from September 3-5, 2026, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues his engagement with Russia.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced the visit on Wednesday, stating that Jaishankar will hold bilateral consultations with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski during the trip.

Jaishankar's visit marks his first
Jaishankar's visit marks his first standalone trip to Ukraine since February 2022, when the country has been embroiled in a conflict with Russia. His last visit was part of an official delegation accompanying Modi in August 2024.
In contrast, Jaishankar has made at least 10 visits to Russia since 2019, highlighting his close ties with Moscow. Meanwhile, Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet again on September 12-13 at the 18th BRICS Summit.
The visit assumes significance in light of an Indian being killed during Russian attacks on Ukraine's capital on Tuesday, making it the second such death this year. The safety of Indian nationals in the war-torn region has been a pressing concern for New Delhi, which has raised the issue with both Moscow and Kyiv.

India and Ukraine had previously engaged in diplomatic talks after five Indian seafarers were killed in July last year. India has long advocated dialogue and diplomacy to bring an end to the Ukraine-Russia war, but its simultaneous engagement with the two countries may be seen as building a platform for talks between Moscow and Kyiv.
However, Jaishankar's visit could also be aimed at another proposition – participating in rebuilding Ukraine in the post-conflict future. With Poland scheduled to visit India in October this year, Jaishankar's trip may also serve to assuage European concerns, particularly those of eastern Europe, as New Delhi engages with the European Union on a trade deal.
