Key Highlights

  • X shifted all U.S. creator payouts from Stripe to X Money starting Wednesday.
  • The change affects both the Original Content Rewards Program and user subscriptions.
  • Accounts are held at the FDIC-insured Cross River Bank rather than X directly.
  • X retired its Creator Revenue Sharing Program and transitioned creators to Original Content Rewards.

Social network X announced on Wednesday that starting today, all of its U.S. creator payouts will be handled through X Money, the app’s digital payments service. This update applies to payouts from both X’s Original Content Rewards Program and user subscriptions, according to an update shared directly on the platform

Starting today, U.S. payouts for Original Content Rewards and Subscriptions will be paid through @XMoney. Users will have access to their payouts the moment they are sent, providing a much faster way to receive earnings compared to previous methods used on the platform.

For those already using X Money, no action is needed, and the next payout will be sent directly there. Creators who are not yet on the platform can open an account to receive their funds.

The main benefit of this new payment system is that the transactions are instant, removing the need to wait until the end of a billing cycle.

Previously, payments required reaching a minimum threshold before a creator could access their money, and they were processed every two weeks. X documentation states that the minimum payout was set at $30 under the old system.

However, the wording of the new announcement indicates that there are no other options for receiving funds, meaning X is requiring creators to use X Money.

Transition to New Rewards Program and Requirements

Reached for comment, a representative for X confirmed that the change is mandatory for all users based in the United States. Creators located outside the U.S. will remain on Stripe for their payment processing needs.

This shift comes alongside other recent changes to creator programs on the platform.

On September 7, X will officially retire its Creator Revenue Sharing Program, which stopped accepting new members last month. Creators are being transitioned instead to the Original Content Rewards Program. As the name implies, this program places a much heavier emphasis on original content creation.

The company’s new payments service began supporting creator payouts earlier this month. This financial offering forms a key part of Elon Musk's broader plan to transform X into a comprehensive everything app. The system includes a bank card offering 3% cash back, instant payments, and free ATM withdrawals.

Banking Partners and Tax Reporting Details

Although it provides digital banking services, X Money is not officially a bank. Instead, user accounts are held at the FDIC-insured Cross River Bank, ensuring standard financial protections for participants using the system.

X also noted that creator payouts will count toward X Money users' direct deposit requirements. Meeting these requirements helps users qualify for the service's better APY rate. Currently, the website indicates that X Premium users receive a boosted 6% rate, compared to the standard 4% rate.

In addition to these financial updates, X will issue a Form 1099-NEC for individual users receiving creator payouts. For registered LLCs, the company will collect the organization's W-9 information to ensure that all 1099 tax documents remain accurate.
