Battery Energy Storage Hits Record High, Boosting Global Grid Stability

Global battery energy storage capacity reached a record high of 301.7 gigawatts in 2025, representing a 65.8% increase from the previous year and a 158-fold rise over the past decade.

This remarkable growth is crucial for integrating booming solar power into the global electricity mix, as it enables shifting solar output to evening demand periods, reducing curtailment, and enhancing grid stability.

China leads the way with 144.1 gigawatts of battery energy storage capacity, accounting for nearly half of the global total, while the United States follows with 56.6 gigawatts.

The growth of utility-scale storage is particularly noteworthy, as it now accounts for three-quarters of global capacity and is transforming batteries from experimental technology into essential grid infrastructure.

This evolution helps manage the tension between growing renewable energy sources like solar power and persistent fossil fuel reliance.
