Angry Anderson, Rock Star Behind Kylie's Wedding Theme, Dies at 79

Renowned musician Gary Anderson, better known as Angry Anderson, has left an indelible mark on the music world with his passing at the age of 79. As the frontman of rock band Rose Tattoo, Anderson's career spanned over four decades, with the band's rise to fame beginning in 1976.

The musician's solo song Suddenly became an international sensation after being featured in a key role in the Australian TV soap Neighbours. There, it accompanied the wedding of characters Scott and Charlene, played by Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan, in 1988. The episode drew a massive audience of 20 million viewers in the UK alone that year.

Anderson had long been adamant that the song was chosen for the scene. And he would later claim it was the best song he had ever written. In the months leading up to his death, Anderson suffered a cardiac arrest while on Rose Tattoo's farewell tour in Europe.

This prompted a hospital stay before his return to Australia. The band subsequently cancelled nine live performances. A joint statement from Anderson's family and Rose Tattoo described him as a devoted father and cherished bandmate.

Acknowledging that his loss would be deeply felt by those who knew and loved him both domestically and internationally. The statement expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and messages of love and continued support.

Emerging from Melbourne in 1947, the influential Australian rock duo Anderson and Rose Tattoo carved out a significant presence on the local music scene, with their 1978 debut album marking the beginning of a prolific output that would span five albums. Following the band's dissolution in 1985, lead vocalist Andrew Anderson continued to forge a successful solo career, with the 1987 single Suddenly garnering widespread attention.

The song's inclusion in the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours. This features Kylie Minogue's character Charlene Mitchell's wedding to Scott Robinson. Played a key role in propelling Suddenly to the top three in both the UK and Australian charts. However, Minogue's own debut solo single, Locomotion, edged Anderson's song out of the number one spot in Australia.

Throughout the 1990s, Anderson maintained a steady stream of solo releases. At the same time, it contributing to the reunion of Rose Tattoo in 1993, which supported Guns N' Roses on their Australian tour. The band's own reunion in 1998 was followed by a 2006 induction into the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame.

Anderson's diverse credits also include a notable appearance in an Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar. As well as a stint playing the role of Herod. In recognition of his contributions to the community, Anderson was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993, in honour of his charitable work and dedication to youth advocacy.
