Absolute Universe Takes Shape: DC's Radical New Continuity

DC Comics has made a bold move in late 2024, splitting its universe into two distinct continuities: the traditional DC Universe and a new "Absolute" universe. This radical shift was prompted by the death of long-term villain Darkseid. And it has led to the creation of revamped versions of classic characters.

The Absolute Universe has proven to be wildly popular. With 15 of the top 20 best-selling comic issues of 2025 being DC Absolute titles.

At the heart of this new universe is a version of Batman that is both radical and familiar. Written by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Nick Dragotta. This series presents a version of Bruce Wayne who grew up in Gotham's Crime Alley, rather than as a wealthy playboy.

This twist has allowed the series to explore themes of class and identity. Making it a standout in the world of superhero comics.

Another standout series in the Absolute Universe is Absolute Wonder Woman, written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Hayden Sherman. This version of Diana Prince has an inverted backstory. With her being raised on the Wild Isle of Hell rather than Paradise Island.

Despite these hardships, Diana has become a powerful and compassionate hero, tackling kaiju and teaming up with Batman and other heroes.

For a more experimental approach, the Absolute Universe has Absolute Martian Manhunter, written by Deniz Camp and illustrated by Javier Rodríguez. This series follows an FBI Agent, John Jones, who bonds with a mysterious green alien entity that allows him to see the thoughts of those around him.

Inspired by the writing of Thomas Pynchon, this series is trippy and idiosyncratic, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.

DC's Absolute Universe panel at New York Comic Con will take place on Friday. October 9 at 11AM ET, and is moderated by DC executive editor Chris Conroy and DC group editor Katie Kubert. With its innovative approach to character development and storytelling, the Absolute Universe is sure to continue to captivate fans of superhero comics.
