Yankees Find Promising Replacement for Struggling Shortstop
The New York Yankees have found a promising replacement for their struggling shortstop in George Lombard Jr., who has been filling in for Anthony Volpe since his demotion to the minor leagues.
Meanwhile, former Yankees' shortstop option Jonathan Ornelas has had a tumultuous journey, bouncing between teams and struggling at the highest level of baseball.
Ornelas was recently re-signed 310/.378/.505 batting average and 11 home runs in just over 300 plate appearances.

The 26-year-old Ornelas has been on a winding path since being acquired He was expected to compete for a shortstop role, but ultimately found himself joining the Athletics shortly after, before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers to replace injured star infielder Brice Turang.
Ornelas' strong performance in Triple-A has provided reason for the Brewers to give him another chance, despite his struggles at the highest level. With Lombard making a strong first impression in the Bronx, Volpe has been taking reps at second base, and Ornelas is now looking to prove himself once again.
“The contract includes an invitation to MLB Spring Training camp and a midseason opt-out,” Francys Romero reported late last year. “Ornelas has a strong chance to make the team, as the Yankees could be without Anthony Volpe until May.”
