Key Highlights

  • India's smartphone market expected to decline 12% this festive season.
  • Trade-in demand expanding beyond metros into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
  • Premium smartphones driving device protection demand.

India's smartphone market is projected to experience a 12% decline in sales volumes during the upcoming festive season. Despite a 5% growth in overall market value, according to Counterpoint Research. This decline is attributed to rising memory costs.

Which have led to increased prices and prompted consumers to defer purchases or rely on financing and trade-in offers to upgrade their devices.

As the holiday season approaches, a longstanding trend is poised to take center stage: the replacement cycle. Rather than driving sales of new devices. The festive period is now expected to be dominated by consumers upgrading their existing smartphones. A shift largely attributed to the growing appeal of premium models that have become increasingly accessible due to declining component costs.

At Counterpoint Research, Tarun Pathak cautions that the upcoming festive season will be shaped by a shrinking pool of active consumers, who are increasingly priced out of the market by rising smartphone costs. This led to a surge in replacement purchases rather than discretionary upgrades.

Trade-in demand is expanding beyond metropolitan areas to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, suggesting that premiumisation is spreading to smaller markets. Servify, which handles over 3 lakh device trade-ins annually, reports that trade-in volumes in October and November are typically around 50% higher than in regular months.

The shift towards expensive smartphones is simultaneously boosting demand for device protection services. Servify notes that premium smartphones have a 30-40% higher protection attach rate than mid-range devices. With protection increasingly bundled with financing and upgrade plans.

Rising component costs are limiting manufacturers' ability to offer deep discounts. Attractive exchange values, easy financing, and assured buyback programmes are expected to play a vital role in driving festive sales and meeting consumer demand.

This trend is likely to be driven by the popularity of premium smartphones and the need for consumers to protect their investments.

The upcoming festive season is poised to be a significant test for the Indian smartphone market. With several factors contributing to its growth and decline. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how consumers respond to the changing landscape and what strategies manufacturers adopt to stay competitive.
