Key Highlights

  • Kimberly Guilfoyle, US ambassador to Greece, asked to resign after corruption allegations.
  • Guilfoyle's background and controversy.
  • Trump's response and next steps.

The White House has requested Kimberly Guilfoyle'It's resignation from her role as US ambassador to Greece. According to a statement from press secretary Katie Zacharia.

A former Fox News host, Guilfoyle has been under increasing scrutiny following allegations that she sought reimbursement from a Trump donor for her credit card expenses in exchange for influence within the administration, and was also accused of misconduct during a recent visit to Athens.

Guilfoyle has vehemently denied the claims, stating that the ambassadorship had been the "honour of a lifetime". The president's comments on the matter were limited, but he did express disappointment with the situation. Officials stated that Guilfoyle's actions were not in line with the administration's values.

Guilfoyle, a 57-year-old former California Governor Gavin Newsom's ex-wife, was first nominated as envoy to Athens in December 2024, a month before Trump's return to the White House as president. The nomination came amid reports of her recent split from Donald Trump Jr, to whom she was engaged.

A series of text messages, first reported by The Wall Street Journal and seen by the BBC, appear to show Guilfoyle requesting financial assistance from Eric Deters, a long-time Trump ally. In another message, dated just days before her US Senate confirmation hearing last July, Guilfoyle wrote: "I need you to get this done for me today."

Trump stated that Guilfoyle had a past connection to his son, but emphasized that she was not a family member. "She went to Greece, and it seemed she was doing a good job, but we had concerns about the situation," Trump said.

The president also praised press secretary Katie Zacharia, describing her as "very good" in her first White House press briefing.

Guilfoyle's legal team has questioned the legitimacy of the messages. Suggesting that the ambassador had been seeking reimbursement for her pre-appointment work with Deters. This includes public speaking engagements and consulting services. As a result, Trump has announced that Guilfoyle will no longer be attending events in Greece.

The White House has declined to comment further on the situation, citing the ongoing investigation into the allegations. Guilfoyle's departure from the ambassadorship marks a significant shake-up in the Trump administration's foreign policy efforts.

The controversy surrounding Guilfoyle's tenure has raised questions about the administration's handling of corruption allegations and the role of personal relationships in decision-making. The situation has also sparked debate about the boundaries between public and private life for government officials.

In the wake of the allegations, Guilfoyle's future plans remain uncertain. The ambassador's departure from the role has left a power vacuum in the White House. With implications for the administration's foreign policy efforts in Greece and beyond.

The White House has announced that it will provide further updates on the situation as more information becomes available. The investigation into the allegations is ongoing. And it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days and weeks.
